Planning ahead for Brown Girls Only

In the midst of finals week (a Wild Wild West of ink-barren printers, off-kilter sleep schedules and consuming caffeine like an elixir), I have been taking time out to work on my other blog, Brown Girls Only.

With work and life and school and friendships on the front burner, it’s tough commenting on every issue pertaining to women and non-binary people of color. But I know it’s still important to touch on it as an outlet committed to doing so.

This concern, as well as my reservations about being the end-all, be-all when it comes to intersecting race and gender identities, has set me on the hunt for contributing writers.

Often, I’ll message my femme friends of color who are communications majors or simply excellent writers.

Some follow through, some don’t.

So I’ve taken my quest outside of Syracuse University and reached out to kind strangers on this lovely world-wide web. I recently have received an influx of messages. Lots of them have been filled with not only an eagerness for writing as a craft, but so many ideas, time-pegged and evergreen, that are just brilliant.

Throughout this process, I can feel myself getting that rich sentiment that creeps up on me whenever I’m in the editing ring. I am so excited to be working with and developing new writers the way I have in the past, at my own pace and planning.

It’s one small piece of the picture, but I am excited for what 2018 is going to bring for Brown Girls Only.
